Bright paths leads to bright destinations : IoT-enabled Smart street lighting.

Overview

The Problem

Effectively and efficiently illuminating urban roads or streets is a crucial and difficult task. Because lighting on urban roads should ensure the smooth and comfortable driving experience to the residents with in the limited municipal budgets.

The Solution

Smart Street light solution allows the ultimate utilization of street lights in a city and gives a huge opportunity for energy savings and optimized maintenance with smart way of controlling and monitoring system.

Research & Define

User interviews

We first start understands the major pain points of municipal management, (Integrated Command Control Center) ICCC team. Before we interact with them, we done field observation and existed system conditions. After getting few insights from field observation we move to interact with concerned departments. We are getting more inputs from them. Few of the major problems we define after those successful interviews and observation are as follow

  • Street lamps are constantly turned on
  • Lamps are controlled simultaneously
  • Over lighted streets waste energy and energy costs
  • Huge electricity consumption is a burden for the environment!
  • Any lighting issues are rarely detected

Ideate & Design

System Architecture

Lights turn on automatically according to a surrounding light intensity or custom scheduling.

Key Value Deliverables

Right amount of Light at Right area at Right time

  • Improves operation and energy efficiency
  • Detects outages and show location of light on UI
  • Informs to concerned persons in case of breakdown/failure/lamp flickers
  • Reduce maintenance expenses
  • Decrease MTTR (Mean Time To Repair) and Increase MTBF (Mean Time Between Repair)

Key Learnings

This is one of the starting projects as a UX designer I started. I learned how to collaborate with various R&D engineers like Hardware engineer, Firmware/Software Developer and Domain experts. Another lead step which crafts my career as UX designer is interact with customer segment and interview them. I prepared pre-defined questions and done few site observations which helps a lot. At initial design I am fail in few areas but afterwards the next release of software which creates few value deliverables coming from failure learnings. I always believe continuous learning, perfect observation and empathy makes value.

Disclaimer: Most of the products/projects I am involved as a UX Designer/Project Manager/Jr. IoT Solution Architect are Government Smart City and Industrial IoT related. So, due to NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement) polices so much of information not revealed. Information is fully confidential.
